B'nei Mitzvah: B'Yachad
Meets alternate Sundays, 9:15 a.m.-Noon
B'Yachad is the Hebrew word for "together." At Or
Shalom, all students preparing for bar or bat mitzvah enroll in the B'Yachad
Program during the school year leading up to their ceremony. Students with
varying levels of previous Jewish education study, socialize, celebrate, and
contribute to the community as a group. Bar and Bat Mitzvah students and
their families take part in a year of fun and educational classes offered by Or
Shalom's Rabbi Laura Duhan Kaplan and community members. This group
program builds a community of students and families as they share in creative
and traditional Torah study, Tikkun Olam (social action) projects, holiday
programs, breakfast, and more! The group meets two Sundays a month and is
intended to supplement students' private study of their Torah portion.
The B'nei Mitzvah are also encouraged to join in the communal life of the shul.
An Or Shalom Bar/Bat Mitzvah is tailored to the abilities of
the young person involved and to the sensitivities of the entire family. Our B'nei
Mitzvah generally chant from the Torah and prepare a d'var Torah (a teaching
based on their studies, their understanding and their personal experience of
their Torah readings). Many lead part of the Shabbat morning service as well.
Or Shalom has a number of experienced teachers who can help young people and
their families prepare for this transformative occasion.
