EMAIL
PROGRAMS: REPLYING AND FORWARDING
Some
email programs automatically attach the entire prior post. Please turn off that
feature so that Digest readers (those folks who opt to receive a full day«s
worth of emails in one large post) don't have read the whole thing multiple
times. When replying to an e-mail
that has been sent to the list, please delete any part of the prior message
that is not relevant to your response. Delete most of the original message and
keep only the sentence or sentences that you are referring to in your reply.
Make sure your email program is set to send text. We've had some problems with
email programs sending html code.
Replying
to individuals:
To
reply to an individual who has sent an email to the list, you will have to
manually put their e-mail address in the "reply to" field because, by
default, all replies go to the list. This can result in embarrassment if
personally comments or information appear on the list.
Please
e-mail that person privately if all you are going to say is something like
"I agree." or "Yes, that's true". These are valuable in a
sense that they let the member know that someone is listening, but please
remember to send it to them privately. If a member requests a response to items
like "something for
sale" or "please help me", reply only to that member and not the
list. Don't press the reply button - delete the list address and put the
individuals address in the "reply to" field.
If
you have a comment, question or criticism about a particular item that another
member has sent to the list, we generally prefer it if you respond directly to
that person. Personal exchanges in the public forum of the list tend to get a
little tedious, especially if the comments are personal in nature. It is hoped
that people will use the same discretion and courtesy off list as they would
use if their comments were witnessed by the on-list community and refrain from
"flaming" an individual in private.
Forwarding:
Please reformat any messages you forward. You can cut and paste the material
you wish to forward into a new message. Or you can make alterations to the
entire message once you hit the "forward" button. Please remove all the addresses of all
the others who may have previously forwarded the message and all previous
recipients. Remove the ellipses (>) from the beginnings of lines and
re-organize any distorted text.
Messages that have been forwarded multiple times without reformatting
are annoying to read and often barely legible.
Please
preface your forwards with a few words of a personal message to your fellow
list-members. Please be discriminating. We all receive message from folks who
forward everything! The information highway is flooded with funny, cute things
that go around endlessly. These kinds of things are usually easy to find on the
web.
Choose
stories, jokes and notices that are unique, relevant and newsworthy to forward.
Blind
Carbon Copy:
Most
email programs have a blind carbon copy option. It is usually found under the
CC (carbon copy) and is called "BCC" Please use it if you are
emailing other people as well as the list. This will protect your friends from
trying to reply to the list, which won't work, and protect their email
addresses from being shared with strangers.
ATTACHMENT
AND VIRUSES:
This
list has been set up to accept attachments. This is a very convenient feature,
but it also puts us at risk of sharing viruses. Please ensure you have reliable
virus protection and keep it up to date. Pay attention to warnings from
accurate sources, and do not open any suspicious files. I talked to other list
managers that allowed attachments and they reported no problems. If problems
occur, this feature will be changed. You can set your email program to reject
attachments. It is also a good idea if you are submitting an attachment, to put
the same information in the body of the email message. Not all people can open
all programs and some people will not accept an attachment.
HOAXES
AND SCAMS:
Please
be wary of urban legends, virus hoaxes, chain letters, appeals on the behalf of
sick children and the like. These things end up functioning like viruses,
except they are spread by the good intentions of e-mailers who want to help
others, instead of pernicious programming. There are about 200 people on the Or
Shalom list, most of us with good hearts, so you can see the potential for hoax
infection. There are many sites where you can check the veracity of anything
you receive. http://www.snopes.com is a
good resource. Phrases like "send this to everyone you know" is a
good tip off that the mail may be a hoax.
"What is lofty
can be said in any language, and what is mean should be said in none."
Maimonides
Members
of this list are largely members of Or Shalom. Some are friends or affiliated
in some other way. Sometimes
people who are considering membership join this as a way to get to know the
community. We are not restricted to members only but I do check out new
subscribers to ensure they are legitimate and not spammers or advertisers and
that they have a valid reason for wanting to join our discussions.
Feel
free to write to me at Or-Shalom-owner@yahoogroups.com if you have any
questions about whether a email is appropriate or how to reformat it. I would
much rather solve any problems before they hit the list. I will also write to
any individuals who seem to need some guidance with their mail.
I
have started with the 3 basic guidelines for the list. All the rest are
courtesies. As moderator, I prefer to keep the guidelines simple - the main ones are "No
Flaming" and the "Israel/Palestine protocols" and "No
Commercial Advertising". Responsible use of virus protection and the
privilege of sending of attachments is crucial.
FLAMING:
Email
is a very quick way to respond to each other. It is easy to commit "e-rage", or to vent and
press send. Most of us slip up from time to time. If you have a slip, please
acknowledge it and apologize. Most of us are quite forgiving of the occasional
slip. However, please try to avoid this. Set your email program so it does not
send things immediately and holds them in the outbox until send is pressed
again. Or hit "save" and put it in your drafts box for the next day.
Absolutely
no flaming allowed. "Flaming" is when you berate, name-call belittle
or are rude to another member on the list. A general rule regarding
communication: respond to the issues, not the individuals. As a Jewish
Spiritual Community we have a wealth of ethics regarding conduct in our Torah.
These
behaviours will result in a warning from the moderator the first time. The
second time, the offender's messages will monitored for a month before they are
sent to the list. The third time will result in a six month period of
monitoring. Subsequent to that, the member may be suspended or banned from
participation on the list.
Please contact the moderators at Or-Shalom-owner@yahoogroups.com
with your concerns about these posts, and do not respond to the list. If you have a concern about the actions of the moderators,
please contact the communication liaison person of the O.S. board.
ISRAEL/PALESTINE
AND THE OR-SHALOM LIST:
After
a period of heated and often non-productive exchanges we pretty well decided
that the general list is not the place to hold detailed discussions of
Israel/Palestine issues. We generally stick to announcement about local events
and the like in neutral language and plain details- date, time, place,
description.
Any
breach of this guideline will result in a warning from the moderator the first
time. The second time, the offender's messages will monitored for a month. The
third time will result in a six month period of monitoring. Subsequent to that, the member may be
suspended or banned from participation on the list. These consequences also
apply to anyone who continues the discussion by reacting to an inappropriate
post. Please contact the moderators at Or-Shalom-owner@yahoogroups.com
with your concerns about these, and do not respond to the list. If you have a
concern about the actions of the moderators, please contact the communication
liaison person of the O.S. board.
COMMERCIAL
ADVERTISING:
It
is fine for members of this list who own businesses, lead workshops, have a
health care or therapy practice, sell items or have services to offer to
occasionally send informal announcements/flyers about these things. Please preface these things with a
personal invitation to the community.
However,
any mass or commercial style advertising is strictly not allowed. Any breach of this guideline will
result in a warning from the moderator the first time. The second time, the
offender's messages will monitored for a month. The third time will result in a
six month period of monitoring.
Subsequent to that, the member may be suspended or banned from
participation on the list.
