Day of Service:
Have you been
wondering what’s happened to the survey you completed? In conjunction with the
Board, we decided that more planning is essential to ensure a successful and enjoyable
Day of Service. With this in mind, a facilitated meeting will be held ASAP
after the AGM so that everyone can be included in the planning-, - the newly
elected Board as well as the current Board, the Tikkun
Olam committee, as well as interested members of the
community. All this means that we
are looking at a Spring 2012 Day of Service, but the later date will hopefully
enable us to meet our goals including the development of an ongoing
relationship with involved agencies as well as the recipients of
"service."
Living Wage Campaign:
Or Shalom is a signator to the open letter in support of the Living Wage
Campaign to which Vancity is the latest major signator.. See Living Wage for Families for more information
about this campaign.
Canadian Blood Service:
We are grateful that
blood donations continue to trickle in,, but much more
is needed. Won’t you consider making the commitment just once? It’s in you to give! Sign up at Blood
Services Canada. When donating, remember to sign up as an Or Shalom "Partner
for Life” with the ID ORSH008548
Tzedakah:
Tzedakah
is derived from צדק (tzedek) -
meaning righteousness, justice, or fairness. The words justice and charity have different meanings in
English, but in Hebrew, the word tzedakah means both
justice and charity.
Our practise is to give 15% off the top to the Rabbi’s
Benevolent Fund, followed by a 4 pronged formula in which we allocate according
to the following guideline: Local-Jewish, Local-non-Jewish, Global,
Israel:
In recent years we
have contributed to Beit Hashanti
(in support of abused and abandoned youth)
Global,: Survivor
Mitzvah project (provides direct financial aid to elderly Holocaust survivors
still living in Eastern Europe)
$600 to Tibetan Nuns
project (Dedicated to educating
and supporting nuns in exile in India)
Solar cookers for
women in the Darfur refugee camps
The Stephen Lewis
Foundation (Grandmothers to Grandmothers project supporting grandmothers caring
for children whose parents have died of Aids)
Local-Jewish :
Tikva Housing for helping with their bed bug
infestation
Local Non-Jewish
- Kidsafe
Our major Tzedakah collection is Erev Yom
Kippur. This year, please remember
to COME WITH CASH, , big or small, to contribute to
the collection before services.
Membership:
Tikkun Olam is a committee
that is open to all Or Shalom members. Is this your year to lend a hand?
