Shabbat Shuvah
The Seven Question
Interview
Babylonian Talmud, Tractate Shabbat
31a,
translation by Rabbi Laura Duhan Kaplan
This week we all judge our lives as they unfolded in
the past year, and we make commitments to live differently next year. Here our
Talmudic sages offer six key questions to guide our self-evaluation and
planning.
The sage Rava said: On the
day you are entered into judgment you will be asked six questions:
Did you help create or educate the next generation?
Did you deal with people in good faith?
Did you set aside time for spiritual study and
reflection?
Did you use your intellect to explore real
wisdom?
Did you seek to understand the real idea behind the
presenting one?
Were you sustained by a vision of Messianic time?
