Hybrid Shabbat Soul with Maoz Inon
April 19, 2024 8:00 pm - 10:00 pm
Hybrid"Hope is not found, it is made, together."
-Maoz Inon
During this polarized time in our world, there is no shortage of opinions but rarely do we have a voice that brings people together beyond the divide. Maoz Inon's message stands out amidst the cacophony.
Maoz experienced the profound loss of his parents on Oct. 7. During his period of mourning he decided the way to honor their legacy was not through vengeance but through an uncompromised commitment to peace. Since that pivotal moment, Maoz has traversed Israel and Europe reaching out to Palestinians who, like him, have experienced great loss. Through these encounters he has helped shape a new narrative and emerged as a leading international voice for peace between Israelis and Palestinians.
Maoz has been invited to speak at the 2024 Vancouver TED Talk Conference entitled 'The Brave and the Brilliant.' Rabbi Hannah and I are incredibly honored to have him come to Or Shalom for a very special engagement on Friday night April 19th. He will share his insights as part of our Shabbat Soul musical service and will stay after to respond to questions over tea in the social hall.
This event will be cosponsored by JSpace and our hope is that it helps to bring together disparate parts of the Jewish community in a shared effort to reclaim our core values of peace and compassion.
Cost: Free (Although our programs are free of charge, they are not free of expense. If you feel inspired, please consider an $18 donation here.)

More Talmud with Rabbi Susan Shamash
April 28, 2024 11:30 am - 1:00 pm
Social HallSome say that the only way to change the world is through the serious study of Talmud as a spiritual practice. This year, 5784, we will continue our study of the last chapter, chapter 9 of Masechet/Tactate Brachot/Blessings, the first tractate of the Babylonian Talmud. It’s a bit of a wild ride!
So far we have learned about blessings that constitute an independent category of blessings for thanksgiving: anything that deviates from the norm obligates us to recite a blessing such as mountains and seas, natural phenomena, unique creatures, or events of extreme benevolence. We offer thanks for God’s goodness and miracles and accept the tragedies and disasters.
In the New Year we will pick up at the vast topic of dreams and their interpretation. Nothing in our existence is meaningless. We must seek meaning and significance in even ethereal matters like dreams which can then serve as road maps to guide the dreamers along the paths of their lives.Come, join Rabbi Susan Shamash and other serious, eager learners as we grapple with the text, join the Jewish communal conversation, and bring our voices to the renewal of Judaism!

Moving with the Sacred Sefirot
May 14, 2024 7:30 pm - 9:00 pm
Moving with the Sacred Sefirot (6 sessions)
In this 6 week series during the counting of the omer, we will embody the kabbalistic sefirot. Each session we will learn about the sefirah, dance to a carefully crafted soundscape, journal and draw, sing and connect with each other.
No experience necessary. We move in our unique way, listening to our body. There is no choreography to follow. You can also lie down and rest, dance from a chair, write in your journal and take in the music and teachings in any way that feels comfortable to you.
Aliza is an open floor conscious dance teacher and registered clinical counselor. www.alizarothman.com

Song / Study / Silence: a 7-week Omer themed engagement at the intersection of Torah study and spiritual practice
May 15, 2024 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm
Rabbi Hannah’s final Zusia offering as Senior Rabbi of Or Shalom will be a generative,
experiential class, an open-ended creative process engaging our felt, intuitive responses to the
weekly themes of the Omer, selections from the weekly Torah cycle, visual images, melody –
and their inter-textuality. After orientation to the practice, opportunity will be offered to class
members to select texts and images for our consideration.

Questions about this practice, new to Or Shalom, can be addressed to rabbi Hannah directly at
