Dialogue Project to Discuss Patrilineal Descent

Who is born a Jew?
Opinions on this issue have shifted over the last four thousand years, and today is a particularly vexed topic. Must one have a Jewish mother, as Talmudic tradition came to assert, or does a Jewish father also make one Jewish?
For us, as a community, it is not just an intellectual question, but one that is alive amongst us. Many of us have strong feelings about what’s right, and worries about ramifications
should we adopt a perspective that diverges from the norm in Jewish Vancouver.
Or Shalom members, register to join the conversation in the context of a dialogue
facilitated by trusted community members under the guidance of Mark Winston and Rabbi Hannah. We will speak from heart, mind and experience and we’ll spend time imagining our future.
Open to Or Shalom Members only
As has been true of our past four Dialogue Projects, this program is for Or Shalom members only. It is conceived as an in-reach project meant to create safe space for vulnerable conversation on a difficult question.
The outcome may lead to a process of change in Or Shalom behaviors or policies, and therefore, for this additional reason, it is important that participants be individuals who have acted to identify with Or Shalom as their synagogue home.
