B’Yachad – Simchat Mitzvah with Or Shalom

What is B’Yachad?

B’yachad (together) is Or Shalom’s Simchat Mitzvah program with interactive study for youth taught by singer-songwriter Harriet Frost and Jewish educator Matthew Gindin.

The B’yachad program has been reimagined as a two year course with the option to stay on for another year after your child’s Simchat Mitzvah at no additional cost, as a way to support the connection and continuous learning of youth of our community.

Our new curriculum focuses on a broad knowledge of Jewish culture, religion, history and values with a goal of offering a greater breadth of portals to Jewish identity. Classes will be 2.5 hours to accommodate more robust learning.

Harriet Frost will teach an expanded Hebrew and Trope curriculum, which will give the students a deeper knowledge of Hebrew and allow them to spend more time working on preparing individual Torah portions in preparation for their Simcha!

Preparing for Simchat Mitzvah

At Or Shalom, Simchat Mitzvah preparation begins two years before our youth are called to the Torah for their first Aliyah. Ours is a multi-modality class meeting on Sunday afternoons during the school year and includes special participation on some holidays and Shabbatot. Our program will include a social action initiative in the spirit of “It is not the study that is essential, but rather the action (Pirke Avot 1:17).”

Sunday Class Time: 2:30-5 p.m. at Or Shalom (710 E 10th Ave.). Class will be in person at Or Shalom if safety can be assured in accordance with the guidelines of provincial health authorities and Or Shalom’s Covid Comittee. Otherwise classes will be online.

Our current plans are to offer a combination of outdoor and online classes. That will look like a combination of park outings and activities under a covered canopy outside on the shul grounds. When according to our best predictions weather doesn’t look good for those options, classes will be offered by way of Zoom.
