Or Shalom, Vancouver’s east-side shul, is a vibrant spiritual community of more than 240 families. We are affiliated with the Jewish Renewal movement and ALEPH, the umbrella organization of Jewish Renewal communities. An inclusive and responsive community for more than 40 years, Or Shalom values and prioritizes the voices of its diverse membership. Our synagogue model also relies on the combination of lay-led and rabbinic spiritual leadership. Similarly, an active volunteer Board of Directors as well as standing and ad hoc committees comprised of members, drives our strategic direction, decision-making, and action.
Position Overview
Bright Lights meets weekly on Thursdays from 4-5:30pm, with alternating cohorts of kids 6-8 and 9-10. The teacher will creatively implement this program with freedom to bring their own style and elaborations. Classes are divided into one topic dealing with either spiritual values, stories from the Hebrew Bible, or Jewish history and one short session using a children’s textbook to learn Hebrew reading skills.
Duties:
Requirements: familiarity with Jewish holidays, culture, and the stories and teachings of the Torah. Ability to read Hebrew or willingness to learn as you teach required.
There is an established curriculum and textbook for the incoming teacher.
Rate of pay: 35$/h. 3 hours a week covers teaching and prep time.
